School Report #7

Thursday, April 26, 2001

Well, you will read tomorrow that the House voted on a budget this evening. The bill cut spending dramatically in many areas, did not raise taxes, made drastic cuts in court services (causing furloughs in court staffing, delays in prosecutions and potentially killing state wide court computer systems) leveraged Highway projects about $200,000.00 over 10 years instead of paying for roads out of cash flow , but did include a $50.00 per pupil Base increase. I did not support this bill. It is too little and really represents a short term panic reaction to estimated revenue decreases in anticipated increases.

Not many people really liked this proposal, but a majority of the House WILL NOT vote for a school tax increase in any form, ie., liquor, tobacco, other sinning, income, sales or use taxes, but at least it will be a budget proposal that will be sent to the Senate for conference. That is a start. You will recall that the House earlier this session sent an LOB increase to the Senate, but the LOB increase and this House budget bill are separate and independent.

So far, the Senate has not passed a budget proposal, so the House measures have started things moving.

We will keep trying.

Feel free to forward this E-mail to anyone and if you have e-mail addresses of other interested members of our community, please send them to me for inclusion in this address book.

Respectfully,

Doug Patterson
