Thursday, February 21, 2002

As a friend and someone who has maintained an interest in our community’s welfare before the Legislature, it is important to let you know of my plans to run for re-election in the Kansas House of Representatives from Leawood’s District 28.

It is that time again. In the beginning of the second year of my term, there is so much to do and so little time to get it all done in one session. With the challenges we have before us concerning increased funding for education, transportation and essential support for the elderly, it is important that I continue my service and seek re-election for a second term.

In February, 2000, in my announcement for candidacy for State Representative, I wrote:

"The citizens of the 28th District ... are generally mainstream oriented on social issues and do not support or appreciate radical positions on either side of the political spectrum. I agree with that."

I have kept that commitment. My positions on the Business, Commerce and Labor Committee , Health and Human Services Committee and Judiciary Committee allow our community to be well represented in these important areas. My recent election as Vice-Chair of the Johnson County Delegation will assure that our local interests are communicated to the other 25 area Senators and Representatives. I maintain a perfect voting attendance record and was rated 100% by the Kansas Chamber and 92% by the Overland Park Chamber.

I supported transportation financing packages, continue to work on a fair relationship between cities and the telecommunications industry and most importantly, supported and will continue to support as an absolute obligation every education funding package acceptable to our local schools. Blue Valley School District, Shawnee Mission School District and Johnson County Community College are essential for our children, our community quality of life and property values.

I wanted to advise you of my plans to file this month. In the meantime, please find the enclosed questionnaire. Please review it, fill it out and return it either in the mail or by an e-mail reply.

Thank you for your past support and I hope I can call on you the upcoming election.

Very Truly Yours,

Doug Patterson
State Representative, District 28, Leawood

PS: Please be sure to send me your e-mail address for periodic legislative updates.
